Obituary

Brunswick-Dr. Edward Atkinson McFarland age 94 of Meadowbrook Road died Tuesday, March 23rd at the Mid Coast Senior Health Center. He was born at McFarland's Corner in Montville, Me on June 28, 1915 the only child of Aaron Pratt and Nettie Ramsay McFarland moving to Waterville in 1917 and then to Lisbon Falls in 1928. He was educated in Waterville and Lisbon Falls schools graduating from Maine Central Institute in 1932. Dr. McFarland earned his B.S. degree from Bowdoin College in 1936 and his MD degree in 1941 from George Washington University School of Medicine. From 1941-1942 he served his internship at Central Maine General Hospital. From 1942- 1946 Dr. McFarland served in WWII attending the School of Aviation Medicine, serving as a flight surgeon for B-17 & B-26 bombers. Dr. McFarland served in the European Theater with the 3rd Army Battalion as regimental surgeon. Dr. McFarland attained the rank of Major and was awarded two battle stars. After the war Dr. McFarland continued his post graduate studies in medicine and obstetrics at George Washington University. Dr. McFarland practiced general medicine, obstetrics and anesthesiology in Brunswick, Me from 1946 to 1979. Dr. McFarland served on the staff of the Brunswick Community, Parkview Memorial, Regional Memorial and Bath Hospitals. He served as chief of staff of Brunswick Community Hospital, Chief of Anesthesiology at Brunswick Community and Regional Memorial Hospitals. He served as university physician at University of Maine Brunswick Campus, physician for Maine Central Railroad and the National Guard. On July 26, 1981 he married Theresa Senecia Duran Sabate. Dr. McFarland was a member of the Maine Medical Association, Cumberland County Medical Association, American Medical Association. Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, Phi Chi fraternity and the American Legion. Surviving besides his wife Theresa Senecia Duran Sabate  McFarland of Brunswick is two stepdaughters PaulaV. Schafer & Mary Ann V. Schafer Adolf and her husband Ruediger Adolf. Three grandchildren Conrad Gustav Adolf, Marcus Wilhelm Adolf and Isabel Alexandria Adolf all of Manhattan, New York. At Dr. McFarland's request there will be no services. Interment will be in Mt. Repose Cemetery in Montville. Memorial donations may be made to either Mid Coast Hospital 123 Medical Center Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011 or to Parkview Seventh Day Adventist Hospital 329 Maine Street, Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements are by Stetson's Funeral Home 12 Federal St. Brunswick.
